Arte D’Italia is a wholesale company that imports fine Italian ceramics into the U.S. The actual story behind Arte D’Italia began back in the fifties when Italian native Ben Spalluto came to the shores of the U.S., found a bride, and got married. The pair soon learned that they shared a love of fine ceramics – from Italy, of course. The newlyweds traveled back and forth to Italy a number of times before the dream was sparked to bring their love of handmade and hand decorated ceramics to life, back in the U.S. Arte D’Italia Imports was born in 1982 and has quickly become a go-to company for the best in ceramics from Italy.

The company initially focused on importing figurines, but they soon came to the realization that the American market wanted more. They wanted practical items made from ceramic materials, like serving ware and dinner ware. It was soon after that they began to introduce folksy, charming ceramics from Ceramiche Parrucca. There was an immediate need for these types of items, and they became quite popular. The company began to expand their collection to include many more decorative accessories, handmade and hand-painted Italian table ware and more. Today, the company is still run by family, including a son and two daughters, and they are constantly on the lookout for beautiful Ceramics from Italy. Specifically, this company looks for ceramics that are made in small workshops by family operations.

All of the imports that they bring into the U.S. are Majolica, which is made from European red clay. The process is ages old. An item dries and is kiln fired one time before being dipped in a chalky white coating. The design is then painted onto the item freehand, using a lead-free glaze. The item is then fired once more, which brings out the colors of the minerals. A number of the designs that Art D’Italia features date back to artwork that was created during the Renaissance!
