A juicer (or juice extractor) is an automated device that can be activated, either manually or electrically, to extract the juice of plants, fruits and leafy vegetables. There are several types of juicers available and you can choose the right one by taking into account your needs.
Juicers have begun to emerge in the 1930s, thanks to Dr. Norman Walker, who created the first machine that was capable to extract the juice of fruits and other plants. He devised the machine in order to allow people to enjoy the benefits of freshly squeezed fruits and vegetables. A juicer can help you get the necessary daily dose of fruits and vegetables by simply drinking a mixture of your favourite ones. The advantage of freshly squeezed juice is that it is not treated chemically and it thus retains all the natural properties of the fruits and vegetables.
Blenders are often confused with juicers. The difference between a blender and a juicer is that the juicer has a mechanism for separating the pulp from the juice, while the blenders chop fruits into small pieces and mix all the components together.
Centrifugal juicer models are the most common and oldest types of juicer and they usually consist of a shredder and grater, a strainer and a container to hold the pulp. This device uses the principle of centrifugal force to separate the juice from the fruit pulp. The fruits and vegetables are shredded by a disk rotating at high speed. A bit like a washing machine, all the pulp remains stuck on the walls when the disk rotates, while the juice is extracted through a tube in front of the machine. Once the process is completed, all you need to do is remove any pulp left in the unit. Some models feature a self-cleaning function, by ejecting the pulp into a container dedicated for this purpose.
The biggest drawback of this model is that it is particularly noisy, but this type of device remains one of the most easy to use and clean juice extractors. You can also opt for manual juicers, which are silent and are beneficial to health because pressed fruits are more susceptible to oxidation and need to be consumed quickly.
