Chandeliers

Chandeliers were build centuries ago only to fill the dining rooms of fancy and large homes, owned exclusively by the rich. Huge chandeliers manufactured of crystal were a symbol of social status, power and wealth. Because chandeliers are large, they are the focus point of the room in any home.

Chandeliers and the Modern House

These days, designers are playing with chandeliers of any size and shape for all kinds of houses, not taking into account the social status or the grandeur of the home.  Chandeliers should not be all the time elegant. You can choose beside crystal chandeliers other types, like teacup, colonial, revival, contemporary chandeliers or stained glass. The size is different, with a diameter from two feet to eight feet.

One of the first things you should consider before buying a chandelier is how big the room is. The rule is that a chandelier must have two inches per each wide foot of the room.

Because chandeliers are expensive, not taking into account the style, it is very important to choose the one that properly matches your house. Designers advise home owners to buy a chandelier that is in the same style like the architecture and the historical period of the house. It’s not a good option to purchase a new one every time that fashion change.

Look and analyze the structure and height of the furniture inside the room. In case you have tall furniture in the living room, you must not hang one there, because will stay above that furniture piece and will give a sensation of crowded room. A nice rule to remember is that the chandelier must be one third of the diameter of the dining table. In case the chandelier will stay above a table, it must be in proportion to that table.

The last you should think about is the lighting. If the chandelier will be the only light source, it must be enough bright and give plenty of light. In case there is not enough light, you can use table lamps, corner lamps or floor lamps.
