Floor Lamps

A stylish floor lamp is just what you need to add a beautiful new look to your space, whether you are looking to accentuate your living room, den, family room, bedroom, foyer, entryway, or other space!  A floor lamp can be a valuable tool for those who want to add supplemental lighting that doesn’t overwhelm a room.  When choosing a floor lamp, be sure to consider the weight of the lamp.  A lamp with a heavy base is always the best option, especially if you have pets or small children underfoot, since the lamp can be easily overturned and cause injury or become damaged if the lamp does not have a properly weighted base.  For this reason, a floor lamp is not a good choice in some areas of the home, or should be displayed in such a way that kids and pets can’t get to it to knock it over, such as the multiple armed floor lamp that is sometimes used in the corner behind a sectional sofa.

When selecting your floor lamp, be sure that you choose one that goes with or coordinates with your existing furniture in the space, and any metal accents on the lamp are the same finish as any lighting in the room for a look that is harmonious and well put-together.

Choosing the right floor lamp can be difficult, since there are so many out there for you to choose from.  Nonetheless, the tips that follow can help:

  • Choose a floor lamp based on its purpose. Do you want to add extra light to an entire area? Or do you just need a lamp for reading or doing crafts? One type of floor lamp to consider is the torchiere style floor lamp with an inverted shade that points light toward the ceiling. This can bring an inviting, warm look to a dark corner of a room.  And in the smaller room, the torchiere light can be used as a sole source of light, making it perfect for rooms that have no overhead lighting.
  • For reading, a lamp with directional heads can be best.  This type of lamp is adjustable, and has arms that swing out that you can adjust to your own needs.
  • Choose a floor lamp that matches your décor. With such a wide range of styles available, from modern and sleek to antique reproductions, you will find that there is a floor lamp out there for any decorative scheme.
  • Go for quality.  A quality built floor lamp may cost a bit more than a cheaper made model, but it will be safer and last longer than a cheap option.
