Reading Lamps

A reading lamp is a wonderful accessory for those times when you need optimal light for reading the newspaper, a favorite novel, or for doing crafts or hobbies.  A reading lamp can be a desk lamp or a floor lamp, depending on your needs and your own personal preferences.  Oftentimes, a floor lamp is better for reading because it can be adjusted to a degree that most table lamps cannot.  Many floor lamps that are styled for reading have a swing arm that allows you to direct the light in whatever direction you need it to go.

When choosing a reading lamp, choose a lamp that is styled just right for your existing furniture and furnishings, and make sure that any metal finish on the lamp coordinates with or is the same as the metal finish on your current lighting fixtures. This gives a harmonious look to your space.

When selecting a reading lamp:

  • Pay special attention to the bulb that your lamp uses.  If the lamp calls for a 60 watt bulb, putting a 150 watt bulb in the lamp can be foolhardy, as it can cause your lamp to overheat.  This can cause short circuiting of the lamp, which can cause a fire to break out. Avoid the danger by using the right wattage.
  • In a room that has no overhead lighting, you will need a reading lamp around every ten feet to provide adequate light for the room.
