Torchieres

The torchiere style lamp is made to give off lighting in the same direction that an actual torch would, hence, the name, torchiere.  A torchiere lamp can be a floor lamp or table lamp, or it can be a lamp that hangs on the wall.  The original torchiere lamp was a candelabra, with two or more lights and was first put into use in France around the end of the 1600s.  The original style torchiere used just one candle, but the design was improved over the years to include two or even more candles to light a larger space.  Today, the torchiere lamp is super popular, and of course, does not use candles.

When choosing a torchiere style lamp, be sure that you choose one that will not pose any safety issues.  Floor lamps and torchiere style lamps are skinny and long, which makes them really easy to tip over.  A hot bulb can easily burn delicate toddler skin or even lead to a fire.  Be sure that the torchiere lamp is securely installed out of reach of kids and pets.  Perhaps even more specifically is the danger of torchiere style lamps that use halogen bulbs if they are positioned near anything that could be considered flammable, since halogen puts out a lot of heat.  When selecting a torchiere style lamp, be sure to choose one with a sturdy base, a shade that offers the right decorative appeal for your space, and that is compatible with the type of light bulb that you prefer to use.
